API Standard Oil Drilling Desander Separator

Desander separator is a combination of the shaker and desander cone. We call it desander, or hydro cyclone desander. Desander separator is designed to separate drilled solids in the 45 to 74micron range and barite in the 30 to 50micron range. It’s used primarily to remove high solids volume associated with fast drilling of large-diameter top holes.

Desanders are installed immediately downstream of the shaker and degasser. Suction is taken from the immediate upstream tank, usually the degasser discharge tank. Discharge from the desander is made into the tank immediately downstream. Suction and discharge tanks are equalized through valves or an opening located on the bottom of each tank.

Based on different design structure, desander separator is divided in two types

Desander with bottom shaker – Some of the customers would like to the solids to be treated more dryer, desander with bottom shaker will be proposed. The bottom shaker can be Hunter-D series, or Hunter-M, or Hunter-Mini. And the screen panels can be 2, 3, or 4, even 5, screens conforms to API RP 13C. Vibrator motor we use is Martin brand. Top brand of an electrical control panel, Siemens or Schneider brand main components.

Desander without a bottom shaker – 100% Polyurethane(PU) Material for desander separator cones with longer using life. Flexible options for 1 or 2, or 3 of 8inch and 10inch for different capacities. Desander is equipped without a motor and electrical control panel as it’s without a bottom shaker.

When flows into the hydrocyclone along the wall, the bigger solid particles along the wall of hydrocyclone sink spirally under the centrifugal force and gravity, and to be discharged from the bottom flow hole and fall on the under micromesh sieve for separation. The other mediums rise along the spiral of hydrocyclone, flow into the third class separation equipment desilter for a further cleaning treatment from the overflow hole.

Treating capacity of desander separator

Different size cones hold different treating capacity. Before we confirm the configuration or design on mud desander, we should consider the flow rate of all cones. For example, 10″ cone capacity is about 90-120m³/h and we request 240m³/h flow rate then we need 2 desander cones at least. We can configure 3 desander cone sized 10”, or 2 desander cons sized 12”. For much larger capacity, we can use 3 desander cone sized 12”. According to the actual demand and condition, we’ll make desander to satisfy both clients and working condition.

For some clients, they prefer flexible capacity adjustment during operation so we’ll install ball valves on the cones inlet line.
