The shale shaker is the first and most crucial line of defense in a drilling fluid processing system. The equipment consists of vibrating screens through which the returning drilling fluid passes. The mud cleaner then polishes the fluid by removing the fine, abrasive particles that the shaker screens cannot capture. Using a mud cleaner without an efficient shale shaker upstream is highly inefficient and can lead to rapid equipment failure. Conversely, relying solely on shale shakers allows fine solids to accumulate, increasing mud weight, viscosity, and wear on pumps and drill strings.

For unweighted water-based muds in shallow or large-diameter holes, a series of high-performance shale shakers with progressively finer screens might suffice. However, for weighted mud systems, deeper wells, or when drilling through highly abrasive formations, integrating a mud cleaner is often essential.
