Common Linear Motion Shale Shaker Problems and Solutions

Even high-quality linear motion shale shaker equipment from Aipu Solids Control can encounter operational issues. Understanding common problems and their solutions allows drilling crews to resolve issues quickly and maintain solids control effectiveness.

Screen Blinding and Reduced Throughput

Screen blinding occurs when fine particles or sticky clays clog screen openings, reducing effective area and causing mud pooling on the deck. Solutions include adjusting the deck angle steeper to increase cuttings velocity across the screen, switching temporarily to coarser mesh to clear blinding, and ensuring proper mud inhibition chemistry to prevent clay hydration. For persistent blinding with oil-based mud, consider switching to composite frame screens that resist sticking. If blinding is chronic with the current mesh size, the screen may simply be too fine for the drilling conditions—Aipu quick-change design makes it practical to adjust screen specification as conditions dictate.

Uneven Solids Distribution

Solids accumulating on one side of the screen deck indicates flow distribution problems. Check the feed box for blockages or damage. Verify that the feed weir is level and properly adjusted. Ensure the flow line is centered on the feed box. Uneven distribution concentrates wear on one side of the screen, shortening screen life and reducing effective screening area. Aipu feed box design incorporates features to promote even distribution, but flow line alignment and condition must be verified as part of routine shaker inspection.

Abnormal Vibration or Noise

Changes in vibration sound or feel indicate developing problems. Motor bearing wear produces a rumbling or grinding noise that worsens over time. Loose motor mounting bolts cause rattling and may produce visible movement at the motor base. Electrical phase imbalance causes reduced G-force and uneven motor heating. When abnormal vibration is detected, measure motor current draw on all phases, check motor mounting bolt torque, and compare vibration characteristics to the baseline data provided in Aipu factory documentation.

Structural Cracking

Fatigue cracking in the frame, particularly around motor mounts and welded joints, indicates either excessive operating hours or operation beyond design parameters. Aipu heat-treated frames with full-penetration welding are designed for long service life within rated parameters, but all vibrating equipment eventually develops fatigue. Regular structural inspection allows early detection of cracks before they propagate to failure. Minor cracks can often be repaired by qualified welders following Aipu repair procedures, preserving the frame for continued service.
