Shale Shaker Equipment Energy Saving Features

Energy efficiency in shale shaker equipment has become an important consideration for drilling operations seeking to reduce operating costs and environmental impact. Aipu Solids Control has integrated energy saving features into its Hunter series shale shakers, combining over 15 years of engineering development with the recognition that energy-efficient design benefits both operating economics and equipment longevity.

The primary energy consumers in a shale shaker are the vibrating motors, which typically operate continuously throughout the drilling operation. Aipu addresses motor energy consumption through several design approaches. Premium vibrating motors from Ital-Vibras, Martin, and Oli are selected not only for reliability but also for energy efficiency, with high power factor ratings that minimize reactive power consumption and reduce the apparent power draw from the rig power system. Proper motor sizing for each specific shaker model ensures that motors operate near their optimal efficiency point rather than being oversized and running at partial load where efficiency is lower. The eccentric weight adjustment system allows operators to match vibration intensity to actual process requirements, reducing energy consumption when full G-force output is unnecessary for the current drilling conditions.

Mechanical design contributes to energy efficiency through weight optimization and vibration management. Aipu uses finite element analysis to design shaker basket structures that achieve the necessary rigidity for reliable vibration performance while minimizing structural weight. Lighter baskets require less motor force to achieve the target 6.0G to 7.5G acceleration, directly translating to lower energy consumption for equivalent separation performance. The isolation system—using springs or mounts specifically selected for each shaker model’s mass and operating frequency—transmits minimal vibration energy to the supporting structure, reducing energy loss to the environment. This isolation also reduces noise levels and structural fatigue in the rig structure, providing benefits beyond direct energy savings.

Operational practices also contribute to energy optimization. The deck angle adjustment from minus 1 degree to plus 5 degrees allows operators to select the angle that provides adequate cuttings conveyance at the minimum energy input. Quick-change screens enable the use of optimal mesh sizes for each formation, avoiding the energy waste of processing fluid through overly fine screens when coarser screens would meet separation objectives. Dual-motion capability in the Hunter-MGD model provides the flexibility to use lower-energy elliptical motion when conditions permit, with the ability to switch to higher-energy linear motion when formation requirements demand it. Manufactured in Aipu’s 50,000 square meter Xi’an facility under API Q1 certified quality management, energy-efficient shakers deliver the dual benefits of lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact without compromising the separation performance that drilling operations require.
