Shale Shaker for Drilling Daily Operation Tips

Daily operation of a shale shaker requires consistent attention to a few key practices that maximize performance and extend equipment life. Aipu Solids Control provides these operational guidelines based on extensive field experience with Hunter series shakers worldwide.

Startup Procedure

Before starting the shale shaker each day, perform a quick visual inspection. Check that all screen panels are properly tensioned and free of tears or holes. Even small screen damage allows solids to bypass separation and enter downstream equipment. Verify that screen retention hardware is secure. Check motor mounting bolts for proper torque. Inspect vibration isolation springs or mounts for even compression and freedom from damage. Confirm that electrical connections are tight and safety interlocks are functional. These inspections take only a few minutes but prevent most common operational problems.

Flow Management During Operation

Maintain even mud distribution across the full screen width during operation. The distribution box or weir should spread flow uniformly. If mud pools at the feed end or flows over the back of the shaker, the flow rate may exceed the shaker’s capacity for the current screen mesh. Reduce pump rate or switch to a coarser screen temporarily. Watch for cuttings accumulating at the feed end without moving—this indicates either insufficient deck angle or screen blinding. Adjust deck angle steeper to increase cuttings velocity. Monitor the cuttings discharge. Wet, soupy cuttings suggest too high a flow rate or too fine a screen. Dry, crumbly cuttings are ideal.

Shift Change Checklist

At shift changes, document operating parameters including flow rate, shaker G-force setting, deck angle, screen mesh in use, and any observations about performance. Clean mud accumulations from shaker surfaces to prevent corrosion and maintain visibility of components. Check motor temperatures; rising temperature trends often indicate developing bearing problems. Record any unusual noise or vibration and investigate before the next shift. Aipu Hunter shakers feature accessible maintenance points and quick-change screen systems that make shift-change procedures efficient. Maintain at least two complete screen sets on location for each mesh specification in use. Good shift change documentation creates a continuous record that helps identify developing issues before they cause downtime.
