Shale Shaker for Drilling Screen Replacement Instructions

Screen replacement is the most frequent maintenance task performed on a shale shaker, and doing it correctly is essential for maintaining separation performance. Aipu Solids Control designs its Hunter series shakers with quick-change screen systems that make this task efficient while ensuring proper screen tension and alignment.

When to Replace Screens

Screens should be replaced when visual inspection reveals tears, holes, or separation from the frame. Even small openings allow solids bypass that degrades mud quality and damages downstream equipment. Screens may also need replacement when excessive wear causes mesh openings to enlarge beyond specification, when blinding cannot be cleared through normal cleaning, or when a different mesh specification is needed for a new formation or drilling phase. Aipu recommends inspecting screens at each shift change and more frequently when drilling abrasive formations. Having spare screens on location for each mesh size in use eliminates the temptation to continue running damaged screens because replacements are unavailable.

Screen Replacement Procedure

First, shut down the shaker and follow lockout and tagout procedures to prevent accidental startup. Clean the deck surface thoroughly, removing all mud and debris that could prevent proper screen seating. Release the screen retention system—Aipu quick-change designs use wedge blocks, tension bolts, or cam-lock mechanisms depending on the model, all designed for tool-free or minimal-tool operation. Remove the old screen panels carefully, noting their orientation and position. Inspect the deck rails for wear, damage, or buildup that could affect screen seating; clean or repair as needed. Position new Aipu-certified screens on the deck in the correct orientation, ensuring the screen frame seats fully on the support rails. Engage the retention system, tightening evenly to achieve uniform tension across all panels. Over-tightening can distort frames and reduce screen life; under-tightening allows screens to move during operation, causing rapid wear.

Post-Replacement Verification

After screen replacement, run the shaker dry for several minutes and check for unusual vibration, rattling, or screen movement. Verify that all retention hardware remains secure after this initial run. Record the screen change including mesh specification, date, and running hours to track screen life. Aipu API-certified replacement screens ensure consistent mesh specifications and cut points. Using non-Aipu screens may compromise separation performance and can void warranty coverage on critical deck components.
