Solids Control Shale Shaker Equipment vs Desander Equipment

Understanding the differences between solids control shale shaker equipment and desander equipment is essential for designing an effective solids control system. Aipu Solids Control manufactures both types of equipment and provides this comparison to help operators make informed decisions about solids control system configuration.

Solids control systems use multiple equipment types in sequence, with each stage removing progressively finer particles. The shale shaker serves as the first and most critical stage, removing the largest cuttings directly from the drilling fluid returns before they can be broken down into smaller particles. Desanders, operating on the hydrocyclone principle, remove the next size fraction of solids that pass through the shaker screens. This sequential arrangement means that shaker performance directly affects desander loading and overall system efficiency.

Functional Comparison

Aipu shale shakers use vibrating screen technology with mesh sizes from API 40 to API 200, removing solids typically larger than 74 microns. The Hunter series provides capacities from 50 to 420 cubic meters per hour, handling the full drilling fluid flow rate. Screen selection determines cut point; the shaker is a positive separation device that physically prevents oversized particles from passing through the screen. Desanders, by contrast, use centrifugal force in a hydrocyclone to separate particles by density, with cut points typically in the 40 to 74 micron range. Unlike the shaker, desander efficiency depends on consistent feed pressure, proper apex sizing, and fluid properties. The desander processes only a portion of the total flow, with the majority bypassing to subsequent equipment.

Why Both Are Necessary

Neither the shale shaker nor the desander alone can handle the full range of drilled solids. Attempting to process all solids through a desander would cause rapid cone plugging and excessive wear. Using only a shaker with very fine screens would severely limit throughput and accelerate screen consumption. Aipu provides complete systems where the shaker handles the high-volume coarse solids removal and the desander removes the intermediate-size solids, with each stage protecting the next from overloading. With over 15 years of solids control experience, a 50,000 square meter manufacturing facility in Xi’an, and API Q1 certified quality, Aipu is uniquely positioned to provide both equipment types as an integrated, optimized system.
