What are the key components of a shale shaker?

A shale shaker consists of several key components that work together to achieve effective solids separation. Understanding each component helps operators maintain equipment properly and troubleshoot issues effectively. Aipu engineers each component for durability, performance, and serviceability.

Base Frame and Support Structure

The base frame is the foundation of the shale shaker, absorbing dynamic loads from the vibrating basket and transferring them to the rig structure. Aipu frames are fabricated from heavy-gauge structural steel, with full penetration welding at critical joints and post-weld heat treatment to relieve residual stresses. This robust construction ensures dimensional stability and structural integrity through millions of vibration cycles. The frame also incorporates lifting points, mounting provisions, and integrated fluid containment.

Screen Basket or Deck

The screen basket is the vibrating assembly that holds the screen panels and receives the drilling fluid flow. It is mounted on the base frame through vibration isolation springs or rubber mounts that allow the basket to vibrate freely while isolating the vibration from the rig structure. Aipu screen baskets are precision-fabricated with flat, rigid support rails that ensure even screen tension and uniform wear. The deck angle is adjustable from minus 1 degree to plus 5 degrees on most Aipu models, allowing operators to optimize cuttings retention time for current conditions.

Vibrating Motors

The vibrating motors are the power source that drives the entire separation process. Aipu uses premium-brand motors from Ital-Vibras, Martin, and Oli, matched in pairs and mounted on precision-machined surfaces to ensure balanced, efficient vibration. These motors generate the 6.0G to 7.5G of acceleration that Aipu has determined provides optimal separation performance with acceptable screen and equipment life.

Screen Panels

Screen panels are the consumable components that perform the actual separation. Aipu provides API-certified screens in mesh sizes from 40 to 200, available with both stainless steel and composite frames. The quick-change retention system allows screen replacement in minutes, minimizing operational downtime for this frequent maintenance activity.

Flow Distribution System

The distribution box or weir at the feed end of the shaker spreads drilling fluid evenly across the full width of the screen deck. Proper flow distribution is essential for maximizing the effective screening area and preventing localized overloading. Aipu designs these components for easy access and cleaning to maintain optimal flow patterns.
