What is a Linear Motion Shale Shaker in Solids Control?

A linear motion shale shaker is the primary solids control equipment used in drilling operations to separate drilled cuttings from drilling fluid through straight-line vibration. Aipu Solids Control manufactures linear motion shakers in its Hunter series that represent the most widely used vibration technology in the oil and gas industry.

Linear motion refers to the pattern of vibration generated by two counter-rotating vibrating motors mounted on the shaker basket. When these motors rotate in opposite directions, their combined forces produce a straight-line, back-and-forth vibration pattern that moves cuttings along the screen surface in a controlled, efficient manner. This contrasts with earlier circular motion shakers that tended to roll cuttings rather than convey them effectively. Aipu Hunter series linear motion shakers use premium Ital-Vibras, Martin, and Oli motors precisely matched and mounted to produce the balanced linear vibration that defines this technology. Operating at 6.0G to 7.5G of acceleration, Aipu linear motion shakers deliver aggressive separation suitable for modern high-rate drilling.

Linear motion provides several advantages for solids control. The straight-line vibration pattern conveys cuttings efficiently from the feed end to the discharge end of the screen deck, preventing accumulation and ensuring consistent screening. The linear motion also produces effective dewatering as cuttings travel across the screens, maximizing drilling fluid recovery. For hard formations producing granular cuttings and water-based mud systems, linear motion delivers optimal separation performance. Aipu’s adjustable deck angles from minus 1 degree to plus 5 degrees allow operators to fine-tune the linear motion effect for specific conditions—steeper angles for faster conveyance or flatter angles for maximum fluid recovery.

Linear motion shakers are typically the first equipment in the solids control system, handling the full circulating volume of drilling fluid. Their role is to remove the largest and most voluminous cuttings fraction before the fluid continues to desanders, desilters, and centrifuges for finer separation. Aipu’s linear motion shakers, manufactured in our 50,000 square meter Xi’an facility under API Q1 certified quality management, are designed and tested to handle this demanding primary separation role reliably across diverse drilling conditions. With over 15 years of experience and equipment in more than 30 countries, Aipu provides linear motion shakers proven in the full range of global drilling environments.
