A Beginner’s Guide to Oilfield Shale Shakers

This beginner’s guide to oilfield shale shaker equipment provides a clear introduction to the function, types, and selection considerations for this essential drilling equipment. Aipu Solids Control, with over 15 years of manufacturing experience, helps newcomers to the drilling industry understand shale shaker fundamentals.

A shale shaker is the first piece of solids control equipment in a drilling fluid system. Its basic function is simple but critical: separate drilled rock cuttings from the drilling fluid as it returns from the wellbore. Drilling fluid (commonly called drilling mud) is pumped down the drill pipe, through the drill bit, and back up the annulus between the drill pipe and the wellbore wall, carrying the rock cuttings generated by the bit. Before this fluid can be recirculated, the cuttings must be removed. The shale shaker performs this initial separation through vibrating screen panels that allow fluid and fine particles to pass through while conveying larger cuttings to discharge.

The two main types of motion are linear and balanced elliptical. Linear motion shakers like most of Aipu’s Hunter series use two counter-rotating motors to produce straight-line vibration, which is the most common and versatile type. Balanced elliptical motion adds a slight elliptical component to the vibration, which can be advantageous for sticky clay formations and oil-based muds. Aipu’s Hunter-MGD dual-motion shaker provides both motion types in a single unit, representing the most flexible option for diverse drilling programs.

Key specifications to understand when evaluating shakers include G-force, which indicates vibration intensity—Aipu shakers operate at 6.0G to 7.5G—and screen mesh size measured by API number where higher numbers indicate finer screens. Processing capacity in cubic meters per hour must match the rig’s mud circulation rate. Effective screen area determines how much fluid can be processed simultaneously. Aipu’s product range spans from the compact Hunter-Mini for small operations to the high-capacity Hunter-MG4T tandem for large rigs.

Quality indicators for evaluating manufacturers include API Q1 certification, which Aipu maintains and which can be verified through the API Composite List. ISO certifications demonstrate broader operational excellence. Factory size and equipment—Aipu operates from a 50,000 square meter facility in Xi’an—indicate manufacturing capability. Global experience with equipment operating in more than 30 countries provides field validation. Aipu’s use of premium Ital-Vibras, Martin, and Oli motors and adjustable deck angles from minus 1 degree to plus 5 degrees reflect the engineering quality that beginners should look for when selecting shaker equipment.
