How to Prevent Cuttings Bypass in Shale Shaker Equipment

Cuttings bypass in shale shaker equipment occurs when drilled solids pass through the shaker without being properly separated, re-entering the active mud system and degrading drilling fluid properties. Aipu Solids Control designs its shaker equipment with multiple features specifically intended to eliminate bypass and ensure complete solids capture.

Root Causes of Bypass

Several conditions can lead to cuttings bypass. Torn or improperly installed screen panels create direct pathways for solids to pass through the screen bed without separation. Worn screen seals or gaskets allow fluid and solids to leak around the edges of screen panels rather than flowing through the screening surface. Overloading the shaker beyond its rated capacity causes the fluid pool to extend past the end of the screen, carrying cuttings directly into the clean mud tank. Incorrect deck angle settings can either flood the screen (angle too flat) or cause premature solids discharge (angle too steep), both reducing separation efficiency.

Aipu Anti-Bypass Design Features

The Hunter series incorporates multiple engineered solutions to prevent bypass. Precision-machined screen bed surfaces ensure flat, even support for screen panels, preventing the gaps that develop on irregular surfaces. High-durometer rubber seals around screen panel perimeters create positive compression when screens are properly tensioned, eliminating edge bypass. The wedge-style screen tensioning system applies uniform pressure across the full panel span, preventing localized loosening that can occur with bolt-down systems. Overlapping panel designs where screens meet ensure there is no gap at panel junctions where fine solids could pass through.

Operational Prevention Measures

Beyond equipment design, proper operating practices are essential for bypass prevention. Screens should be inspected for damage at each connection and trip, with damaged panels replaced immediately. Screen tension should be verified after initial installation and rechecked after the first few hours of operation as components settle. Flow rate should be maintained within the shaker’s rated capacity, considering both fluid volume and solids loading. The fluid pool endpoint should be monitored and the deck angle adjusted to keep the pool within the active screening area with adequate dry screening length at the discharge end. Aipu provides training and on-site support to help crews implement these bypass prevention practices effectively.
