Reading and understanding shale shaker screen mesh size is essential for selecting the right screens and evaluating separation performance. Aipu provides clear labeling and documentation to help operators make informed screen decisions.

Understanding Mesh Count
Screen mesh size is expressed as a number indicating the count of openings per linear inch in each direction. A 100-mesh screen has 100 openings per inch, meaning 100 wires per inch in both the warp (lengthwise) and weft (crosswise) directions. This results in 10,000 openings per square inch (100 x 100). Higher mesh numbers indicate finer screens with smaller openings and more wires per inch. Aipu provides screens from 40 mesh (coarse) to 200 mesh (ultra-fine), with the most commonly used range being 80 to 150 mesh for typical drilling applications.
API Screen Designation System
The API RP 13C standard establishes a systematic method for designating screen performance. API screen designations are based on the cut point—the particle size at which the screen retains a specified percentage of solids—determined through standardized testing. An API 100 screen, for example, has a cut point such that particles larger than a specified size are retained while smaller particles pass through. This standardized designation allows meaningful comparison between screens from different manufacturers, which simple mesh counts do not provide because different weaving patterns can produce different cut points at the same mesh count.
Practical Screen Selection Guidelines
When reading screen specifications, consider both the mesh count or API designation and the application. For surface hole sections with large cuttings and high flow rates, 40 to 60 mesh screens provide adequate solids removal with maximum throughput. For intermediate sections, 80 to 120 mesh screens balance separation quality with throughput. For production zones where formation protection is critical, 150 to 200 mesh screens provide the finest separation. Aipu provides selection guidance for each shaker model and typical drilling scenario, helping operators match screen specifications to their specific requirements.
