Slurry Piping Design Considerations

Piping for drilling fluid applications presents unique challenges beyond typical process piping. Solids-laden fluids can settle in low-velocity zones, causing plugging. Aipu piping design addresses minimum velocity requirements to prevent settling, pipe sizing that balances pressure drop against settling velocity, long-radius bends to minimize erosion in abrasive service, and cleanout and flush connections for maintenance access. Slope requirements for gravity flow lines are specified based on fluid properties and solids characteristics. These considerations prevent the operational problems that arise from inadequate slurry piping design.

Valve Selection and Specification

Valve selection for solids control service requires careful consideration. Aipu specifies knife gate valves for isolation in slurry service where solids could prevent tight shutoff with standard gate valves, full-bore ball valves for clean fluid applications, and diaphragm valves where precise throttling is required. Valve materials are specified for erosion and corrosion resistance. Valve actuation—manual, pneumatic, or electric—is selected based on operating frequency and safety requirements. Valve position indication and limit switch provisions are included for remote monitoring.

Instrumentation for Process Monitoring

Effective solids control requires appropriate instrumentation.
