Basic Function and Purpose
As drilling progresses, the drill bit generates rock fragments called cuttings that become entrained in the drilling fluid returning to the surface. If these solids remain in the fluid, they degrade drilling performance by increasing mud density, causing excessive wear on mud pumps and downhole tools, and reducing rate of penetration. The shale shaker removes these solids by passing the returning fluid over vibrating screens that retain cuttings while allowing clean mud to pass through for recirculation.
Core Components
A typical Aipu drilling shale shaker consists of a rigid steel frame supporting one or more screen decks, vibration motors that generate the shaking motion, an isolation system using springs or rubber mounts to prevent vibration transmission to the rig structure, and a flow distributor that spreads returning mud evenly across the screen surface. The screens themselves are tensioned across the deck and retained by a quick-change clamping system that allows rapid replacement.
Position in the Solids Control System
The shale shaker is the first piece of solids control equipment that drilling fluid encounters after returning from the wellbore. It removes the largest and most voluminous cuttings fraction. Fluid passing through the shaker screens then flows to downstream equipment—desanders, desilters, and centrifuges—for progressively finer solids removal. The shaker’s performance directly affects the efficiency of all subsequent solids control stages.
