What is the role of shale shaker motors?

The motors on a shale shaker are the power source that drives the entire solids separation process. Without properly functioning motors generating the correct vibration characteristics, the shaker cannot perform its primary function of separating drill cuttings from drilling fluid.

Generating the Vibrating Force

Shale shaker motors are specialized industrial vibrating motors that rotate eccentric weights to produce an oscillating force. Unlike standard electric motors designed to produce smooth rotation, vibrating motors are engineered to operate with deliberately unbalanced rotors that generate the controlled vibration essential for solids separation. Aipu equips its shakers with motors from internationally recognized manufacturers—Ital-Vibras of Italy, Martin Engineering of the United States, and Oli of Italy—selected for their proven reliability and performance in demanding industrial vibration applications.

Motor Configuration and Motion Type

Aipu shakers typically use two motors mounted in specific positions on the screen basket. The relative position and rotation direction of these motors determine the vibration trajectory—the path traced by a point on the screen deck during each oscillation cycle. Counter-rotating motors positioned to produce force at approximately 45 degrees to the deck create linear motion, which provides rapid, powerful cuttings conveyance. Slightly offset motor positions produce balanced elliptical motion, which provides smoother operation and better handling of sticky cuttings. Aipu Hunter-MGD dual-motion shakers can produce both motion types from the same motor pair through a mechanical adjustment.

Power and Performance Specifications

Motor power is matched to the shaker size and required G-force output. Aipu Hunter-MG3 shakers use paired 1.5 kW motors, while larger models use motors up to 1.94 kW each. The motors are selected to deliver 6.0G to 7.5G of acceleration at the screen deck, the range that Aipu has determined provides optimal separation performance. Higher G-force increases separation aggressiveness but also increases screen wear and power consumption, so the motors are sized to operate in this balanced range rather than at maximum possible output.

Motor Maintenance and Longevity

Vibrating motor bearings operate under severe conditions and require regular lubrication according to the Aipu maintenance schedule. Monitoring motor temperature during operation can provide early warning of bearing issues. When motors require replacement, they should always be replaced in matched pairs to maintain balanced vibration. Aipu stocks replacement motors for all models and can provide guidance on proper motor selection and installation.
