Where does the shale shaker fit in a solids control system?

The shale shaker occupies the first and most critical position in a complete solids control system, receiving drilling fluid directly from the wellbore flowline before any other treatment equipment. Aipu designs its shakers to integrate seamlessly with the complete solids control train.

Position One: First Line of Defense

In the flow path of a typical drilling fluid system, the shale shaker is positioned immediately after the flowline, before the mud reaches the settling pits or any other treatment equipment. Drilling fluid exits the wellbore through the bell nipple or rotating control device, travels through the flowline, and is directed onto the shaker screen deck. This positioning ensures that the largest and most abundant solids are removed at the earliest possible point, before they can settle in tanks, clog downstream equipment, or be ground finer by recirculation through the mud pumps.

Sequential Processing Through the System

After the shale shaker removes coarse solids greater than approximately 74 microns, the partially cleaned mud flows to the next stages. Desanders remove medium-sized particles, typically 45 to 74 microns. Desilters remove finer particles in the 15 to 45 micron range. Mud cleaners combine hydrocyclones with fine screens for enhanced fine solids removal. Centrifuges provide the final polishing, removing the smallest particles down to 2 to 5 microns. Each stage handles progressively finer solids, and the effectiveness of the entire system depends on each stage doing its job. The shale shaker, as the first stage, sets the baseline for everything that follows.

System Integration with Aipu Equipment

Aipu manufactures not just shale shakers but the complete range of solids control equipment, enabling customers to build integrated systems where all components are designed to work together. Flow capacities are matched so that no single component creates a bottleneck. Control systems are coordinated for simplified operation. Spare parts are standardized where practical. This integrated approach, supported by Aipu 15-plus years of solids control expertise, delivers systems that perform better and cost less to operate than assemblies of equipment from multiple suppliers.
