When drilling operations demand higher flow rates, maximizing your shale shaker processing capacity becomes a priority. Whether working with an existing Aipu unit or planning an upgrade, several strategies can increase throughput without compromising separation quality.

Optimize Screen Mesh Selection
One of the quickest ways to increase processing capacity is switching to a slightly coarser screen mesh. Moving from 200 mesh to 150 mesh, or from 150 mesh to 120 mesh, can significantly increase the open area and fluid throughput while still providing adequate solids removal for many drilling applications. The key is matching the coarsest acceptable screen to the current drilling phase. In upper hole sections where large cuttings predominate and fine solids control is less critical, coarser screens dramatically increase throughput. Aipu quick-change screen design makes these adjustments practical to perform as drilling conditions change.
Adjust Deck Angle for Maximum Flow
Reducing the screen deck angle increases the effective open area presented to the fluid flow and accelerates drainage. Aipu shakers feature adjustable deck angles from minus 1 degree to plus 5 degrees, allowing operators to find the optimal setting for current conditions. For maximum throughput, run at or near the minimum angle. Be aware that lower angles may produce slightly wetter cuttings, but the trade-off in processing capacity often justifies this, particularly in upper hole sections where cuttings dryness is less critical.
Maintain Clean, Unblinded Screens
Screen blinding from sticky clays or oil-based mud residues is one of the most common causes of reduced processing capacity. A single partially blinded screen panel can reduce effective area by 30 percent or more. Regular screen cleaning, use of appropriate mud additives to prevent clay hydration and sticking, and selecting composite frame screens that resist adhesion can all help maintain maximum open screen area. Aipu also recommends keeping spare screen sets ready for quick swaps when blinding becomes severe.
Upgrade to Larger Screen Area
If operational adjustments alone cannot achieve the required capacity, upgrading to a shaker with larger screen area is the definitive solution. Aipu offers several upgrade paths. Moving from a three-panel Hunter-MG3 to a four-panel Hunter-MG4 increases effective screen area by 35 percent. The Hunter-MG4D double-deck configuration doubles the screening area within a similar footprint. For maximum throughput, the Hunter-MG4T triple tandem arrangement provides 8.1 square meters of effective screen area, sufficient for the highest-volume drilling operations.
Consider Multiple Shaker Configurations
Instead of pushing a single shaker to its limit, operating multiple shakers in parallel distributes the flow and provides reserve capacity. Dual tandem configurations from Aipu are designed for exactly this scenario, with a common feed manifold and coordinated controls. This approach also provides redundancy, as drilling can continue on one shaker if the other requires maintenance.
Address Flow Distribution Issues
Uneven flow distribution across the screen deck is a hidden capacity killer. If mud concentrates on one side of the deck, that side becomes overloaded while the other side runs mostly dry. Check that the shaker is level and that the flow distributor or weir is clean and properly adjusted. Even distribution utilizes the full screen area and maximizes the effective processing capacity of the shaker.
